The question we hear most often from clients is, "What should I wear for my photo?"
More and more these days, your clients see your photograph on-line before they meet you. So it is imperative that you make an excellent first impression with that on-line presence. The clothing and accessories you wear should complement the personality you want to express without drawing attention away from your face. So choose your wardrobe with intention.
Wear clothing for your photo session that is comfortable and that makes you feel confident. If your shirt collar or your skirt is too tight, for example, your discomfort is likely to be evident in your facial expression.
Dress appropriately for the impression you want to make with your clients. Solid colors are usually a safe choice for your primary wardrobe items, as are textures. Don't wear loud, bold patterns or prints (except, perhaps, in a scarf or tie) and don't wear loud or neon colors.
For women, full-length or three-quarter length sleeves are more flattering than sleeveless or short sleeves.
Jewelry photographs best if it has more of a minimalist profile than a bold, chunky profile which will draw attention away from your face.
Dark colors on women tend to slenderize the body in a photo.
For men who want to present an executive impression, a dark charcoal gray or dark navy suit is classic. Pair it with a white or light blue shirt and a coordinating tie.
Clothing must be clean and wrinkle-free. If you have pets, be sure to remove cat or dog hair from your clothing. If you don't have time to remove the wrinkles from your shirt or blouse, wear a properly fitting suit coat or blazer.
If your photo will be a more casual one without a jacket or blazer, select a blouse or shirt that has a relaxed fit. It should be neither too tight nor too loose and, if it has a collar, the collar should be well-pressed and open slightly at the neck.
The only time it is appropriate to wear something that has a logo on it is if it is your brand (or the brand of the company you represent) and the photo is intended to represent that brand in marketing materials or on your website. Leave your favorite country club golf shirt or rock band T-shirt at home.
